re: backup to new computer/install

Post by IAS » Tue Oct 05, 2010 11:04 pm

I have Medisoft v11 on an 8 year old computer. The computer is failing despite my recent attempts to upgrade the processor/ram.
I have the most recent backup of data on 2 separate thumb drives.
I have just installed a V12 on another computer...this was never installed previously and was able to register/validate that version.
How do I restore the previous backup from v11 on the thumb drive to a new computer with v12?
thanx in advance for your consideration

First make sure you have Medisoft v12 sp2 installed. Then in Medisoft go to File -> Restore Data -> Find

Browse to the folder on your thumb drive where the backup is stored. You should then see the backup file in the middle pane of the Restore window. Highlight the backup file and click the restore button.

I suggest creating a new practice database in Medisoft first and then restore into that database. Restoring your backup overwrites the data in the currently opened practice and you cannot recover from that except to restore the correct backup.

I sincerely appreciate your efforts.
On the NEW computer/install with v12 sp2, after clicking on the Medisoft Advanced Pt Accounting icon on the desktop I am unable to open the program. The hourglass stays perpetually open without the program starting. I have uninstalled and reinstalled this with no success. On the start menu, there is the program Medisoft with the following 4 links:
File Maintenance
MAPA
OH
Work Administrator
I do not understand how to get to the files you have demonstrated. Please
explain.
Additionally, I have the back up files located at this point on my desktop for
ease of access.

Additionally, would it be easier to reinstall the original software which was v11?

2 options...
create data
convert existing data

I am unable to click on the toolbar

Ok, I managed to get the backup file into Medidata, however, this is a .mbk file. Does it need to be converted to a .adt file?
If so, how do I accomplish that?
When I have Medisoft search for the file to convert, it cannot locate it.

No, do not use convert data. That is for older versions of Medisoft. Use Restore Data as described above. Use Find to browse and find the folder where the .MBK file is located. The restore will unpack all the .ADT files out of the .MBK and then convert up to v12. It sounds like you are almost there! :D

ONCE AGAIN THANKS FOR YOUR HELP
I could not get the data to transfer.
I uninstalled the software and reinstalled.
I created a new folder called Backup and then moved the old data to the folder. I was then able to backup the old data and got the program to run.
2 NEW problems.
(1) I can't activate the program which I had done previously
(2) The same problems exist with the program running VERY slowly, OH not opening. Are you aware of any Windows updates or other programs that interfere with the proper functioning of this program?

Thanx

Gavin,
thanx so much for your help
I spoke with Medisoft who obviously no longer supports v12
I managed to get the software reactivated.
There is obviously some other software interfering with the function.
The remaining programs work without any difficulty.
I have it installed on a new computer with XP downgrade, more than adequate ram, processing speed. I continue to have the same problems with prolonged time to opening, and functioning.
I have uninstalled the HP printer with drivers, unplugged from the internet and disabled Norton, removed most of the recent Windows updates, etc.
Any ideas regarding the program(s) that might be causing the problem
since the same issues exist on the old and new install?

I found it!
After disabling Norton, no effect
I uninstalled Norton and the software works like a charm on both computers again.
Now, I have SonicFirewall on my system. My concern is that I have a networked printer that I would like to keep for use in my front office, but have concerns that there is no virus scan software on the computer that has Medisoft on it. I plan on converting to a new EMR in the next few weeks, but would need to print statements, schedules in the meantime.
Any ideas for settings for my virus scan software (or how to contact regarding Norton) or other software that would be compatible?
Thanx a million for your efforts.

I am confused, is the issue now Medisoft will not start up on your computer?

Try stopping all instant messaging software. Medisoft also has had issues with McAfee antivirus in addition to Norton. You have to uninstall McAfee to resolve the conflict with Medisoft.

You say you have v12 sp2 installed. One of the symptoms of having Medisoft v12 sp1 or earlier installed on Windows Vista or higher is it will generate errors on startup. Make sure you have v12 sp2.

Try right clicking on Medisoft icon and go to compatibility settings and select "Run As Administrator".

thanx again Gavin
The problem was clearly norton.
I installed, but did not activate v12sp2 on another computer.
after much difficulty, got it to run extremely slowly.
Eventually, opened norton business suite>settings>firewall>program rules>
and added the two programs...MAPA and OH
all is well
If there is any way I can help you in the future...contact me

not sure I can since I am on the east coast, but thanx again.

It turns out also, and probably more-so
The drivers from HP 3015dn interfered.
When I reinstalled the printer, similar problems, not as severe as prior
to configuring Norton.
The end of my saga.

Good to know. Medisoft has trouble with the bidirectional printer function of some print drivers. It can hang sometimes after printing a report. The solution is to turn off bidirectional communication in the printer properties. You might also check HP's website for a more generic version of their print driver which may work for you.

Thanks for posting, just stopping back by here every now and then with your Medisoft comments or questions is thanks enough.
