Improving Network Communication and Stability

Post by Gavin Walker » Wed Aug 25, 2010 10:51 am

Medisoft relies on robust network services from the Windows operating system and related networking hardware. This design allows the use of very affordable "platform" software and hardware which allows Medisoft to provide low cost while still offering robust functionality and ease of use.

But networks can be tricky. Most networks suffer from some disconnects and, in limited cases, user data can be lost due to these disconnects. Below are several steps you can take to make sure your network “platform” is as trouble-free as possible.

Networking Platform Checklists

System Checklist

  • 1. Do not stream music from one computer to another over your network. Streaming music consumes a large amount of network capacity and can slow the performance of Medisoft.
    2. Do not run a full virus scan during Medisoft operation and exclude Medisoft programs from auto virus scan options.
    3. Do not use sleep or the hibernate mode on your computers.
    4. Avoid the use of backup programs during Medisoft operation.
    5. Exclude Medisoft from being monitored by your firewalls.
    6. Do not use Volume Shadow Copy on Medisoft folders or subfolders.
    7. Choose Gigabit Ethernet.
Wireless checklist
  • 1. Choose 802.11N WIFI.
    2. Avoid having the wireless station near a microwave or a portable or mobile phone.
    3. Avoid 2.4GHz wireless phones.
    4. If your wireless problems persist, try different channels, or at least try channels 1, 6 or 11.
Notes:

If you are having problems, and are doing most of the above items, remember, it takes only one of the above situations to cause lost connections.

However, most network problems can be traced back to one or more of the above items. Each of these items either can consume network resources or interrupt wireless signals and cause Medisoft to slow down or lose connection between the client computers and the server.

Lost Connection?

You will most likely experience error 6610: The Advantage Database Server did not respond to a database request in a timely manner. A communications problem has occurred. You may need to reenter any information.

Cleaning House

We offer a service called Cleaning House where our support staff will conduct an assessment of your Medisoft Server and present an analysis including any recommendations for improving its operation.

Finally, you can check with us to assist with your network infrastructure.
