Medisoft/Advantage upgrade from 8.1 32-bit to 9.0 64-bit

Post by Paul Williams » Mon Mar 30, 2009 9:32 am

I'm a little frightened of the prospect of what will likely be the next database upgrade.
If (rather, when) we upgrade to Medisoft 15, I'm concerned about how much trouble the upgrade will be.

We've been running Medisoft 14 with the 32-bit version of Advantage Database 8.1, but it's been running (in 32-bit mode) on a 64-bit OS, that being \"Windows Server 2003 x64\".

Will the key shipped with Medisoft 15 be valid on both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of ADS 9.0? Will the database install (upgrade) be able to both convert from version 8.1 to 9.0, and, from 32-bit to 64-bit at the same time?

What happens to our existing (32-bit ADS 8.1 compatible) data dictionaries? Are they reformatted or converted automatically (if necessary) during the ADS 9.0 upgrade process?

Thank you so much.

The key that ships with all Medisoft Advantage v9 works with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Advantage. Advantage v9 will be able to convert data from any previous Medisoft versions. The Medisoft v15 upgrade expects Advantage v9 to be installed first. The structure of the data is changed because of added requirements of Medisoft v15 and not really anything specific to Advantage v9 per se. The data structure between 32-bit and 64-bit are identical and interchangable. Advantage v9 is backwards compatible and old Medisoft databases can be read and written without any data conversions or structure changes.

One note, the Medisoft disk only contains 32-bit Advantage. If you want 64-bit Advantage, you must download that from Advantage's website.

Although the data is interchangable, Medisoft is programmed to only work with the 32-bit version of Advantage at this time. So, even if you have a 64-bit O/S, you must load the 32-bit version of Advantage on that. It still works just fine with a 64-bit O/S.
