New Version of Medisoft and Windows 7 Pro

Post by LDanza » Wed Jan 06, 2016 1:28 pm

Hi Gavin! Happy New Year!! Quick question, my office is still planning on upgrading Medisoft, they are currently on version 14 sp2 (14.2.2.2). And I'm thinking, instead of taking their MS server 2003 server to 2008, thinking about just loading Windows 7 Pro (because they really don't use any server functions or roles). Would the new version of Medisoft run on Windows 7 Pro? That other users can access from within the same network? Or does it have to be on server software? Let me know when you're not busy. Thanks! Larry

Ahhhh, forgot to mention! Will the new version of Medisoft work with the server running Windows 7 Pro, and having Windows 10 Clients connect to it (in the same network)?

There are several problems with sticking with Medisoft v14.

1. It is NOT compatible with 64-bit Windows architecture. Most Windows 7 computers are 64-bit. But, you CAN run Medisoft v14 in XP Mode under Windows 7 Pro. Keep in mind, support from Microsoft for XP Mode ended on 4/8/2014.
2. If you have the issue with slow Medisoft startup or hanging on Windows 10, you have to upgrade to Medisoft v20 to get the patch for that.
3. It is pretty hard to get 32-bit Windows 10. To my knowledge, it only comes on tablets that are too small to work with Medisoft.

So, because you can't get workable 32-bit Windows 10 clients and because you might run into the hanging on startup issue, it is NOT recommended to use Windows 10 with Medisoft v14.

Thanks Gavin! I'm sorry though, I definitely wasn't clear lol We are planning on upgrading to the new version of Medisoft v20. Just wanted to make sure that it's ok to take the server they are on, which is server 2003, and upgrade that server to Windows 7 Pro (instead of Windows Server 2008 or 2012). They really don't use any of the server functions so was wondering, when do the upgrade, if the Medisoft server version 20 will work ok with Windows 7 Pro, and clients with Windows 10 connecting to it, will work out ok. Just want to make sure before we purchase the new hardware in prep for the Medisoft v20 upgrade...

Yes, Medisoft v20 will work with a Windows 7 Pro data host, although Windows Server 2008 or 2012 Standard would be preferred. I would check that there are Windows 7 drivers for your server hardware before upgrading it to Windows 7. It sounds like it is pretty old and there may not be drivers for it.

Thanks so much Gavin! Will definitely have a version of server 2008 r2 on hand if their custom built machine can't take Win7 drivers for storage, it's a pretty basic machine so I doubt it will be a problem but we'll see. Good to know that Windows 10 will connect to a Windows 7 host as well. I'll be in touch when we're ready to do the upgrade. Thanks again!
