NPI

Post by docbyrom » Wed Nov 16, 2011 9:51 am

We recently enrolled in electronic billing for rail road medicare, when I put the NPI in box 33a the system adds 2 extra digits to the end of the number. Does anyone else have this problem, or do those numbers drop off when the claim is submitted to rail road medicare?

NPI is supposed to be 10 digits long. How long is yours?

The NPI that RR Medicare wants used in this box is 8 digits? That is why I'm so confused.

That's not an NPI number. Are you sure they don't need this number in box 33b?

Yes I have talked to them several times about this number and they are very adamant that this is the number that goes in this box 33b.

33a is a 10 digit NPI number pulled from your provider table in Medisoft - individual or group depending on what they have on file. Nothing should be in 33b for Railroad. What are the 2 extra digits Medisoft is adding to your NPI? Go in your provider/practice table and make sure the NPIs are correct in both the group and individual locations.

When I talk with the RR medicare rep, she says that the reason our claims are rejected is because this 8 digit number must be in the 33 b box.

Is anybody else having a hard time being paid by RR medicare?

Tell me what version of Medisoft do you have and I'll try to provide instructions for you.

Edit the Provider's record and go to the Provider IDs tab. Edit the entry corresponding to RailRoad Medicare or create one for RailRoad Medicare if there is not one already. In the National Provider ID field, enter your ten-digit individual NPI. In the Legacy Identifier 1 field, enter your eight digit RailRoad Medicare ID number. Enter 1C in the next drop down box.

If you also need to file your claim with a group NPI, then also select File Claim as Group and make sure a corresponding group NPI record is setup in your practice ids. Otherwise select File Claim as Individual.
