Are you set? Practice Partner Tip: ICD-10 Coding for Obesity

Post by Gavin Walker » Thu Aug 27, 2015 1:29 pm

Crucial track to travel along:
1. ICD-10 requires that coding Obesity codes E66.01, E66.09, E66.3, E66.8 and E66.9 also be billed with the body mass index (BMI) code specific to the BMI reported on the encounter.

2. E66.01 and E66.09 codes Obesity due to extra calories.
  • -E66.01: Morbid, severe obesity due to excess calories
-E66.09: Other obesity due to excess calories
    -E66.3: Overweight

3. BMI codes would be coded according to the BMI reported.
  • -Overweight BMI 25.0-29.9
    -Obesity BMI 30.0 and above
If a patient presents with a BMI of 37, and the documentation states the patient is Obese due to extra calories, it is essential to code:
  • · E66.01 Morbid severe obesity due to excess calories
    · Z68.37 Body Mass index 37.0 to 37.9
If a patient presents with a BMI of 27 then it is essential to code:
  • · E66.3 Overweight
    · Z68.27 Body Mass index 27
Point on updating template in Practice Partner for easiness at coding this right:
Add this to your template if it is not there already to draw in the BMI from vitals taken on the encounter
BMI: <DEL>||BODY_MASS_INDEX||

In addition, you will probably want to update your quick text for the BMI codes and the new ICD-10 codes. and also update your template to include current calorie intake.
