How to setup a Roaming Profile for Dragon Medical

Post by Gavin Walker » Thu Oct 16, 2014 11:51 am

While we generally recommend sticking to a local user profile, in some instances it simply makes sense to setup what's called a Roaming User Profile. What this means is that you save a copy of your User Profile to a central location such as a server. By doing that, the theory is that you will be able to open up the same user profile on any computer where you have Dragon installed. The best thing about that is all the training that you do with Dragon is saved to a single profile instead of having multiple different profiles across 2 or 3 computers.

If this sounds like something you're interested in, please follow the steps below CAREFULLY to setup a roaming user profile.

1. As with anything computer related, you should start off by creating a backup of your user profile which you can resort to in case anything goes wrong. Create a backup of your current User Profile by navigating to Profile > Manage User Profiles. Make sure your desired profile is selected and then click Advanced > Backup. Then you'll just have to wait a few seconds for the backup to complete.

2. Now that your profile is safely backed-up, in that same Manage User Profiles window make sure your profile is selected and this time choose Advanced > Export. In the dialog box that pops up you need to choose a location to save the profile. I would recommend just saving it to your Desktop for the meantime.

3. Now you'll just need to navigate to your server and create a new folder named something like "Roaming Dragon Profile". Once that folder is created you will need to copy & paste or drag & drop the profile you saved on your Desktop into the new folder you created on your server.

4. Time for some tweaks within Dragon. On the Dragon Toolbar, navigate to Tools > Administrative Settings. On the Roaming tab you will need to click the check-box to Enable roaming user profiles. In the settings on the bottom half of that window Uncheck the box next to "Allow non-roaming user profiles to be opened". That last setting is optional but I would recommend it so that you don't confuse your profiles.

5. On that same window, you will now need to tell Dragon where you saved your profile on your server. In the Network Directories section click the "Add" button on the right side. Navigate to your server and select the "Roaming Dragon Profile" folder you created earlier. You DO NOT want to select your actual User Profile folder.

6. Once you do that and click "Apply" you're all set. If you have multiple computers you want to link to your Roaming Profile you will have to follow steps 4-5 again to link those computers properly. Now if you go on the Dragon Toolbar and click Profile > Open User Profile you will see the roaming profile you linked. You may have to click on it to make the menu drop down if you have multiple microphone options setup within your profile.
