Dear Valued Customer,
Over the past several months, Surescripts has received numerous complaints from pharmacies operating in Texas that not all Physician Assistants (PAs) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) are including all of the information on e-prescriptions that is required by the state in order to make said prescriptions legal. Specifically, these complaints have been about the fact that many e-prescriptions transmitted by mid-level practitioners in Texas do not contain the name, address, and telephone number of the PA or APRN’s supervising physician, which is required by the Texas Medical Practice Act. As a reminder, below are the requirements that prescriptions from mid-level practitioners in Texas must meet:
OCCUPATIONS CODE, TITLE 3. HEALTH PROFESSIONS, SUBTITLE B. PHYSICIANS CHAPTER 157. AUTHORITY OF PHYSICIAN TO DELEGATE CERTAIN MEDICAL ACTS SUBCHAPTER B. DELEGATION TO ADVANCED PRACTICE NURSES AND PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS
Sec. 157.056. PRESCRIPTION INFORMATION. The following information must be provided on each prescription subject to this subchapter:
- 1. The patient’s name and address;
2. The drug to be dispensed;
3. Directions to the patient regarding the taking of the drug and the dosage;
4. The intended use of the drug, if appropriate;
5. The name, address, and telephone number of the physician;
6. The name, address, telephone number, and identification number of the registered nurse or physician assistant completing or signing the prescription drug order;
7. The date; and
8. The number of refills permitted.
Practice Partner Patient Records, LytecMD, and Medisoft Clinical will transmit the required supervising physician’s information as long as the mid-level physician has a “Supervising Provider†configured in the application. To verify this in the application, perform the following steps:
- • From the Maintenance menu, select Providers
• Select the midlevel provider, and click the Edit button
• Click the General 2 tab and select the Supervising Provider
• Click the OK button to save changes
